The art scene in Edmonton
On Sir Winston Churchill Square, the Art Gallery of Alberta is easy to spot thanks to its sweeping steel ribbon; inside, it presents Canadian and international exhibitions and makes plenty of room for artists from Western Canada. Nearby, the Royal Alberta Museum devotes large galleries to the province’s history and Indigenous cultures. The artist-run centre Latitude 53 has long championed experimental work in the city.
The 124 Street area gathers several commercial galleries and hosts regular gallery-walk evenings. South of the river, Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue, energized by the nearby university, mix cafés, independent shops and cultural venues. Edmonton is also known for its packed festival calendar, including a major Fringe theatre festival that takes over the neighbourhood every summer and brings the whole city outdoors.
On Artblr, you can explore work by artists in Edmonton and northern Alberta, filter by style or price and message the artist directly. Once you have exchanged a few messages, a studio visit is easy to arrange, and it is often the best way to judge colour and scale. That direct contact carries no commission.
