The art scene in Cape Town
On the V&A Waterfront, Zeitz MOCAA occupies a former grain silo whose interior was carved out of its concrete tubes; it is devoted to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. In the Company’s Garden downtown, the Iziko South African National Gallery presents the national collection, from historical art to contemporary South African work, and is an easy stop during a walk through the city centre.
Woodstock, a former industrial district, is covered in murals and home to galleries, studios and creative spaces. The city centre also has many galleries, and the Bo-Kaap, with its brightly painted houses at the foot of Signal Hill, recalls the history of the Cape Malay community. Every year, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair brings together South African and international galleries, making it a good moment to discover the local scene.
With Artblr, you can browse work by Cape Town artists and write to them directly. Ask about a piece, request photos in natural light or discuss shipping to Canada. A studio visit can also be arranged if you are in town. That direct contact is commission-free.
