The art scene in Mexico City
At the Palacio de Bellas Artes, murals by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and José Clemente Orozco show how central mural painting has been to the country’s history. The National Museum of Anthropology, Museo Tamayo and Museo Jumex span pre-Columbian art through to contemporary work. In Coyoacán, the Casa Azul, or Frida Kahlo Museum, welcomes visitors into the house where the painter lived.
The Roma and Juárez neighbourhoods are packed with galleries, bookshops and independent spaces, and San Rafael and Santa María la Ribera are home to studios as well. Every February, the Zona MACO fair brings together Mexican and international galleries, surrounded by satellite fairs and exhibitions. On Saturdays in San Ángel, the Jardín del Arte gathers painters who sell their own work outdoors, right next to the Bazar del Sábado and its artisans.
With Artblr, you can discover Mexico City artists and contact them directly, in English, French or Spanish depending on what they prefer. Ask questions, discuss shipping or arrange a studio visit. That direct contact is commission-free.
