The art scene in Gatineau
The Canadian Museum of History, designed by Douglas Cardinal on the banks of the Ottawa River, holds major Indigenous collections, including tall totem poles from the West Coast. Cross a bridge and you reach the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa: few regions put two national institutions so close together, which makes a day of museum-going easy to plan. Outside the National Gallery’s entrance, Louise Bourgeois’s giant spider, Maman, is a landmark in its own right.
In Old Hull, cafés, small venues and studios give the area a down-to-earth cultural life. Galerie Montcalm, in the Maison du citoyen, shows artists from the region, while the artist-run centre AXENÉO7 focuses on contemporary practice. Many Outaouais artists also live further north, near Gatineau Park, and open their studios by appointment rather than keeping a storefront.
On Artblr, you can find artists from Gatineau and the wider Outaouais, see which works are available and message them directly. If a piece catches your eye, arrange a studio visit to see it in person. There is no commission on that first contact.
