The art scene in Calgary
Contemporary Calgary, housed in the city’s former downtown planetarium, has become a central venue for current art. In Inglewood, Calgary’s oldest neighbourhood, the Esker Foundation presents free contemporary exhibitions, while 9th Avenue is lined with independent shops, studios and small galleries. It makes a good starting point for a day spent looking at art, with plenty of places to stop along the way.
In the Beltline, the BUMP mural project has covered dozens of walls with work by local and international artists, easy to explore on foot or by bike. The city also hosts regular artist markets and open-studio events throughout the year. The prairie and mountain landscapes shape the work of many painters in the region, as does the presence of the Indigenous cultures of Treaty 7 territory.
With Artblr, you can browse work by artists in Calgary and southern Alberta and contact them directly. Ask about a piece, request a shipping quote or arrange a studio visit. Many artists are happy to send extra photos or a short video of the work in daylight. It all happens with no middleman and no commission.
