The art scene in São Paulo
On Avenida Paulista, MASP (Museu de Arte de São Paulo) floats above a broad open plaza and displays its collection on glass easels designed by architect Lina Bo Bardi. The Pinacoteca do Estado, near Luz station, is devoted to Brazilian art. In Ibirapuera Park, the pavilion designed by Oscar Niemeyer hosts the Bienal de São Paulo, an international contemporary art event since the 1950s and a major reference point for artists across the continent.
The SP-Arte fair brings Brazilian and foreign galleries together each year, and the city has many galleries, particularly in Jardins, Vila Madalena and Barra Funda. In Vila Madalena, Beco do Batman, an alley covered in graffiti, has become a landmark of São Paulo street art. Graffiti and pichação are an integral part of the city’s visual landscape, and you will see them on buildings across every district.
On Artblr, you can browse work by São Paulo artists and write to them directly. Ask for details about a piece, discuss international shipping or plan a studio visit on your next trip. Direct contact carries no commission.
