The art scene in Los Angeles
The Getty Center on its hilltop, LACMA on Wilshire Boulevard, The Broad and the Hammer Museum together cover everything from old masters to contemporary art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) downtown rounds out the picture. Distances are long, so it pays to plan your visits by neighbourhood and leave time for the drive between them.
The Arts District, east of downtown, grew out of former warehouses and now holds galleries, studios and murals. Culver City, Hollywood and West Hollywood are also home to many galleries. Every winter, Frieze Los Angeles brings in collectors and galleries from around the world. Many artists choose the city for the space it offers, and studios here tend to be larger than in New York, which encourages ambitious formats and large-scale work.
With Artblr, you can discover Los Angeles artists and write to them directly to learn more about a piece. Ask for a video, details about the technique or shipping options, and arrange a studio visit if you are in town. No commission is taken on that contact.
