The art scene in Toronto
The Art Gallery of Ontario, with its Frank Gehry wood-and-glass staircase, holds a major collection of Canadian and Indigenous art. The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, housed in a former factory in the Junction Triangle, is dedicated to current work. Between the two, the city is dotted with galleries, especially along Queen Street West and Dundas Street West, where you can easily spend a whole Saturday going from door to door.
Each fall, Nuit Blanche Toronto fills the streets with free installations from dusk to dawn. In July, the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair brings together artists selling directly to the public on Nathan Phillips Square. For street art, Graffiti Alley behind Queen Street West is a must, and the Distillery District, a pedestrian former industrial site, gathers galleries, studios and makers’ shops among its brick buildings.
On Artblr, you can explore work by Toronto artists of every background and style and message them directly. Ask questions, request a studio visit or talk shipping: the conversation between you and the artist happens with no middleman and no commission.
