The art scene in Melbourne
The National Gallery of Victoria, founded in the nineteenth century, spans two sites: NGV International on St Kilda Road, known for its vast stained-glass ceiling, and the Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square, devoted to Australian art, including Aboriginal art. Nearby, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), in a rusted-steel building in Southbank, presents current exhibitions and commissions new work.
Downtown laneways such as Hosier Lane and AC/DC Lane are covered in graffiti and stencils that change constantly, so no two visits look the same. To the north, Fitzroy and Collingwood are home to galleries, studios and artist-run spaces among cafés and independent shops. The NGV also regularly stages a triennial of contemporary art and design, and the Melbourne Art Fair brings together Australian and international galleries.
On Artblr, you can explore work by Melbourne artists and write to them directly. Ask about a piece, request a video or shipping costs to Canada, and arrange a studio visit if you are in town. That direct contact carries no commission.
