The art scene in Marseille
At the entrance to the Old Port, MuCEM, the museum of European and Mediterranean civilizations, is linked to Fort Saint-Jean by a footbridge and is easy to spot thanks to its lattice of concrete. The Musée Cantini presents modern art, while the [mac] museum of contemporary art in Bonneveine covers the last few decades. Together, the city’s museums offer a varied route from antiquity to today.
The Friche la Belle de Mai, a former tobacco factory, has become a large creative hub with studios, exhibitions and events, plus a rooftop terrace open to the public. Cours Julien and its side streets are covered in graffiti and murals and make up one of France’s best-known street art neighbourhoods. In Le Panier, the city’s oldest quarter, craft workshops and small galleries are tucked between colourful façades and steep stairways.
On Artblr, you can explore work by Marseille artists and contact them directly. Ask questions, request a video of the piece or arrange a studio visit if you are in town. Direct contact with the artist is commission-free.
