The art scene in Lisbon
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, set in a central park, combines a collection of historic art with a modern art centre focused largely on Portuguese artists. On the Tagus in Belém, MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) stands out for its wave-like roof, which you can walk on. The National Tile Museum, housed in a former convent, traces the history of the painted ceramic tiles found on façades all over the city.
Lisbon is also known for its street art: the city has supported large murals, and neighbourhoods such as Bairro Alto and Graça are covered in them. Under the 25 de Abril Bridge, LX Factory, a former industrial complex, gathers studios, shops and bookstores. Contemporary galleries have opened in several districts, and the ARCOlisboa fair brings Portuguese and foreign galleries together each year, making it a good time to visit if you are hunting for new names.
On Artblr, you can browse work by Lisbon artists and contact them directly. Ask for details, a video or a studio visit, and talk through delivery. That direct contact is commission-free.
