The art scene in Halifax
The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, downtown, holds the largest art collection in Atlantic Canada. It is home to the tiny house that folk artist Maud Lewis painted from top to bottom, along with a strong collection of Nova Scotian folk art. It is a good place to start if you want to understand the region’s artistic traditions, from seascapes to craft, before looking at what living artists are making today.
NSCAD University, one of Canada’s oldest art schools, has trained generations of artists, many of whom choose to stay in the region. Every fall, Nocturne: Art at Night turns the streets of Halifax into a free evening route of installations and performances. The North End and Agricola Street gather studios, small galleries and makers’ shops, while the waterfront hosts markets and local businesses.
With Artblr, you can find artists in Halifax and across the Maritimes, see their work and message them directly. Ask questions, arrange a studio visit or sort out shipping. If you live far away, the artist can send extra photos or a short video of the piece. Direct contact is commission-free.
