The art scene in Casablanca
In the 1960s, the Casablanca School of Fine Arts gave rise, around Farid Belkahia, Mohamed Chabâa and Mohamed Melehi, to a movement that drew on Moroccan popular arts and crafts to renew modern painting. That legacy remains very present in today’s scene. The Villa des Arts, set in an Art Deco villa, presents modern and contemporary exhibitions, while the Abderrahman Slaoui Museum displays posters, jewellery and decorative objects from a remarkable private collection.
The city’s former slaughterhouses, converted into a cultural venue, have hosted exhibitions and artist residencies. Downtown, with its Art Deco and neo-Moorish buildings, can be explored like an open-air architecture museum. Several contemporary galleries are based in the Gauthier, Racine and Maârif districts, and the Habous quarter gathers artisans and traditional shops along its lanes, where you can watch woodworkers, coppersmiths and other craftspeople at work.
With Artblr, you can find Casablanca artists and contact them directly, in English, French or Arabic depending on their preference. Ask questions, request a video of the piece or arrange a studio visit. That direct contact is commission-free.
