The art scene in Tokyo
Ueno Park gathers several major museums, including the Tokyo National Museum, devoted to Japanese and Asian art, and the National Museum of Western Art, designed by Le Corbusier. In Roppongi, the Mori Art Museum, at the top of a tower, presents contemporary exhibitions, and the National Art Center hosts large temporary shows. The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, completes the circuit.
Ginza has long been home to many galleries, often stacked on several floors of narrow buildings. In Yanaka, an old neighbourhood spared from much redevelopment, SCAI The Bathhouse shows contemporary art in a former public bath. The traditions of ukiyo-e printmaking, ceramics, calligraphy and lacquer remain alive among many artists and artisans. Each year, Art Fair Tokyo brings together galleries of historic, modern and contemporary art, from antique ceramics to recent painting.
On Artblr, you can explore work by Tokyo artists and write to them directly. Ask questions, request photos or a video, and discuss shipping to Canada. That direct contact happens with no middleman and no commission.
