The art scene in Sydney
The Art Gallery of New South Wales, on the edge of the Domain, has expanded with a second building, Sydney Modern, which gives prominent space to contemporary art and to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Facing the Opera House at Circular Quay, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia presents Australian and international artists. The Biennale of Sydney, one of the oldest in the Asia-Pacific region, takes over several venues across the city with each edition.
Every year, Sculpture by the Sea places outdoor works along the coastal walk between Bondi and Tamarama, a hugely popular event. Paddington, Redfern and Chippendale are home to many galleries, several of them specializing in contemporary Aboriginal art. When buying such work, ask about its provenance and how the artist or their community art centre is paid, so that your purchase supports the people who made it.
With Artblr, you can discover Sydney artists and contact them directly. Ask for photos, a video or shipping terms to Canada, and arrange a studio visit if you are in town. That direct contact is commission-free.
