The art scene in Milan
The Pinacoteca di Brera, housed in the same palazzo as the Academy of Fine Arts, presents a large collection of Italian painting. Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper can be seen by reservation at Santa Maria delle Grazie. For contemporary art, the Fondazione Prada occupies a former distillery transformed by the OMA architecture firm, and Pirelli HangarBicocca, a former factory, shows very large-scale installations with free admission.
The Brera district, with its cobbled streets, remains associated with artists, galleries and students from the Academy. Every spring, the miart fair brings together modern and contemporary galleries, and Milan Design Week, built around the Salone del Mobile, turns the entire city into an exhibition. Porta Venezia and Isola are also home to galleries and independent spaces, and are good areas to wander when looking for younger artists.
On Artblr, you can explore work by Milan artists and contact them directly. Ask for extra photos, discuss shipping or arrange a studio visit, perhaps during Design Week. Direct contact with the artist comes with no commission.
