The art scene in Madrid
The Prado, with Velázquez, Goya and El Greco, the Reina Sofía, home to Picasso’s Guernica, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum make up what is known as the Golden Triangle of Art. Side by side, these three institutions span the history of European painting through to the art of the twentieth century and today. CaixaForum, right next door, is easy to recognize by its vertical garden.
Every February, the ARCOmadrid fair gathers Spanish, Latin American and international galleries, with many exhibitions organized around it. Lavapiés, a working-class and multicultural district, is home to galleries and independent spaces, and Calle del Doctor Fourquet, near the Reina Sofía, has a string of contemporary galleries. To the south, Matadero Madrid, a former slaughterhouse turned arts centre, hosts exhibitions, residencies and events, and is a pleasant place to spend an afternoon by the river.
With Artblr, you can discover Madrid artists and write to them directly. Ask about a piece, request photos in natural light or arrange a studio visit. Direct contact with the artist carries no commission.
