The Virgin and Child – Original Orthodox Icon with Hand-Carved Walnut Frame Dimensions: 66 × 51 × 5.4 cm Frame: Hand-carved walnut I painted the icon in tempera, following the traditional techniques of Orthodox iconography. The walnut frame is entirely my own design, hand-carved using traditional woodcarving tools and inspired by the artistic heritage of the Tryavna School. The ornamentation incorporates a distinctive symbolic language. The four-leaf-clover-shaped cross at the top, accompanied by three smaller leaves, refers to the Holy Trinity. The flowers along the sides and the cherries at the base are arranged in groups of four, evoking the four canonical Gospels. The wreath of intertwined branches surrounding the icon symbolizes gratitude, continuity and eternity. The painted image and sculptural relief were conceived as an integrated artistic composition, in which icon painting and woodcarving complement one another to form a harmonious whole. An original, one-of-a-kind work, entirely conceived and executed by Stefan Doychinov. More works by Stefan Doychinov: www.decorwood.net
My name is Stefan Doychinov. I am a Bulgarian painter and woodcarver with more than 40 years of creative experience. I live and work in Samokov, Bulgaria, a town situated near the magnificent Rila Mountains and Rila National Park, which have been a lasting source of inspiration for my art. My artistic practice is rooted in a deep connection with nature, particularly the grandeur and changing moods of mountain landscapes. Oil painting is my primary medium, and I am especially drawn to the dramatic beauty of the mountains, where light, atmosphere, and space come together to create powerful visual experiences. In my paintings, I seek to express more than the appearance of a particular place. I aim to convey my personal perception of the landscape—the emotion of the moment, the character of the light, the depth of the space, and the unique atmosphere that makes each scene memorable. Sunrises and sunsets, approaching storms, drifting mist, deep shadows, and sudden changes in mountain light are recurring sources of inspiration in my work. I approach each composition as an opportunity to explore the relationship between light and shadow, warm and cool colors, and the vast scale of the natural world. My goal is to create paintings that draw the viewer into the landscape, inviting them to experience not only its physical beauty but also its emotional intensity and sense of presence. Alongside painting, I have devoted more than four decades to artistic woodcarving. Working independently, I create unique wooden works, combining traditional craftsmanship with my own artistic vision. My woodcarvings reflect a commitment to precision, patience, and the expressive possibilities of natural wood. Each piece is developed through a personal, hands-on process, from the initial design to the finished work. Throughout my career, I have participated in numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad, including in Germany. I have also held exhibitions in Sofia and Plovdiv, Bulgaria's two largest cities, maintaining an active connection with the country's artistic community. Whether working with oil on canvas or carving wood, my intention is to create original works that unite technical skill, individual expression, and a lasting appreciation for nature and traditional craftsmanship. I approach every work as an independent artistic statement, shaped by years of experience, careful observation, and a personal understanding of form, light, texture, and atmosphere. My work is created in my studio in Samokov, Bulgaria, where the surrounding mountains continue to inspire new ideas and artistic explorations.
