— Stefan Doychinov, about Caucasus, Mount Ushba at Dawn – Panoramic Landscape, Oil“Caucasus, Mount Ushba at Dawn” is an original oil painting depicting the majestic high-mountain landscape of the Caucasus. At the centre of the panoramic composition rises Mount Ushba, one of the most distinctive and dramatic peaks of the Caucasus, often referred to as the “Matterhorn of the Caucasus.” The painting captures the mountain at dawn, when the first warm light of the new day touches the snow-covered and rocky peaks, while the foreground remains immersed in deep, cool blue tones. The contrast between the warm atmospheric light and the cooler colours of the mountain landscape creates a strong sense of depth, space and the monumental character of the high mountains. The wide panoramic format emphasizes the scale and grandeur of the landscape, allowing Mount Ushba to dominate the composition while the surrounding peaks create a broad visual panorama. The work is painted with professional Schmincke oil colours on canvas. The surface has been protected with two coats of final Damar varnish. This is an original one-of-a-kind artwork, not a reproduction or print. My name is Stefan Doychinov. I am a Bulgarian painter and woodcarver with more than 40 years of creative experience. I live and work in Samokov, Bulgaria, a town situated near the magnificent Rila Mountains and Rila National Park, which have been a lasting source of inspiration for my art. My artistic practice is rooted in a deep connection with nature, particularly the grandeur and changing moods of mountain landscapes. Oil painting is my primary medium, and I am especially drawn to the dramatic beauty of the mountains, where light, atmosphere, and space come together to create powerful visual experiences. In my paintings, I seek to express more than the appearance of a particular place. I aim to convey my personal perception of the landscape—the emotion of the moment, the character of the light, the depth of the space, and the unique atmosphere that makes each scene memorable. Sunrises and sunsets, approaching storms, drifting mist, deep shadows, and sudden changes in mountain light are recurring sources of inspiration in my work. I approach each composition as an opportunity to explore the relationship between light and shadow, warm and cool colors, and the vast scale of the natural world. My goal is to create paintings that draw the viewer into the landscape, inviting them to experience not only its physical beauty but also its emotional intensity and sense of presence. Alongside painting, I have devoted more than four decades to artistic woodcarving. Working independently, I create unique wooden works, combining traditional craftsmanship with my own artistic vision. My woodcarvings reflect a commitment to precision, patience, and the expressive possibilities of natural wood. Each piece is developed through a personal, hands-on process, from the initial design to the finished work. Throughout my career, I have participated in numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad, including in Germany. I have also held exhibitions in Sofia and Plovdiv, Bulgaria's two largest cities, maintaining an active connection with the country's artistic community. Whether working with oil on canvas or carving wood, my intention is to create original works that unite technical skill, individual expression, and a lasting appreciation for nature and traditional craftsmanship. I approach every work as an independent artistic statement, shaped by years of experience, careful observation, and a personal understanding of form, light, texture, and atmosphere. My work is created in my studio in Samokov, Bulgaria, where the surrounding mountains continue to inspire new ideas and artistic explorations.
