Mount Haramiya and Bliznaka Lake – A Moment Before the Storm At the end of May, on the threshold between spring and summer, the Rila Mountains begin to change their colours. The snow gradually melts, the high slopes awaken, and nature reveals a new richness of hues and forms. The Seven Rila Lakes, among Bulgaria’s most beautiful and awe-inspiring natural landmarks, possess a distinctive energy and atmosphere that make them a remarkable natural and spiritual phenomenon. I have depicted Mount Haramiya and Bliznaka Lake in a moment of tense calm. A flash of lightning cuts through the darkening sky – the first sign of an approaching storm. Light, clouds and distant mountain horizons evoke the power of nature and the delicate balance that precedes its fury. My name is Stefan Doychinov. I am a Bulgarian painter and woodcarver with more than 40 years of creative experience. I live and work in Samokov, Bulgaria, a town situated near the magnificent Rila Mountains and Rila National Park, which have been a lasting source of inspiration for my art. My artistic practice is rooted in a deep connection with nature, particularly the grandeur and changing moods of mountain landscapes. Oil painting is my primary medium, and I am especially drawn to the dramatic beauty of the mountains, where light, atmosphere, and space come together to create powerful visual experiences. In my paintings, I seek to express more than the appearance of a particular place. I aim to convey my personal perception of the landscape—the emotion of the moment, the character of the light, the depth of the space, and the unique atmosphere that makes each scene memorable. Sunrises and sunsets, approaching storms, drifting mist, deep shadows, and sudden changes in mountain light are recurring sources of inspiration in my work. I approach each composition as an opportunity to explore the relationship between light and shadow, warm and cool colors, and the vast scale of the natural world. My goal is to create paintings that draw the viewer into the landscape, inviting them to experience not only its physical beauty but also its emotional intensity and sense of presence. Alongside painting, I have devoted more than four decades to artistic woodcarving. Working independently, I create unique wooden works, combining traditional craftsmanship with my own artistic vision. My woodcarvings reflect a commitment to precision, patience, and the expressive possibilities of natural wood. Each piece is developed through a personal, hands-on process, from the initial design to the finished work. Throughout my career, I have participated in numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad, including in Germany. I have also held exhibitions in Sofia and Plovdiv, Bulgaria's two largest cities, maintaining an active connection with the country's artistic community. Whether working with oil on canvas or carving wood, my intention is to create original works that unite technical skill, individual expression, and a lasting appreciation for nature and traditional craftsmanship. I approach every work as an independent artistic statement, shaped by years of experience, careful observation, and a personal understanding of form, light, texture, and atmosphere. My work is created in my studio in Samokov, Bulgaria, where the surrounding mountains continue to inspire new ideas and artistic explorations.
