“Nomatei” is a monument to the unacknowledged people. It identifies differences of characters, advocates diversity, and eliminates hierarchies and social positions. Nomatei is a ‘minument’ to human nature and to the thesis that everyone holds an important role in society. It offers space to frailty, to the seemingly insignificant and the often bewildered. The mode of working, sketching in three dimensions, emphasizes body language and poise, over detail, arguing that the whole body is as eloquent as a portrait of each one of us. The scale and presentation balance collectivity and solitude. We exist as ourselves but also through others. For this reason, we might consider them not to be separate pieces but one collective piece of work, a form of human society. All sitters are people from my local community.
My work takes a variety of forms, abstract, figurative and narrative. The materials are clay, resin, plaster, acrylics, mixed media. All my sculptural works share a fascination about human connections, body language and individuality. “Nomatei”, is an installation of handmade, minumental, representational, full body portraits of individuals made of fired clay. My investigation is about a complex web of interactions which take place in the process, between artist, subject, viewer, participant, recipient, audience and object. I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. After 28 years in the communication and advertising sector, I turned my full attention to art. In 2010-12, I studied sculpture under Professor S?awomir Andrzej Mieleszko at the Art Institute of Maria Sk?odowska-Curie, University of Lublin, Poland. I received a Master’s degree in Fine Art at the University of Lincoln, UK and I am member of the Royal Society of Sculptors (http://rbs.org.uk/artists/eleni-zevgaridou).
