In a hot Nigerian afternoon, when village mamas would all go to the farms, with the young ones left to play and bake in the sun. City dwellers that came back to the village would cook in those afternoons dishes that would send the then scarce onion aromas to distant huts and sheds. The tantalizing smell would attract village kids to the "doormouth" of the "stranger". As kids we would make all sorts of noise to attract the cook's attention, from singing incongrous songs to pinching the very little ones, for them at least to squeeze a cry that could see the woman at home, come out and treat us to some portions of cassava and onion soup.
