The art scene in Berlin
Museum Island, in the heart of the city, brings together five major museums, including the Pergamonmuseum and the Alte Nationalgalerie, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Neue Nationalgalerie, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and the Hamburger Bahnhof, set in a former railway station, focus on modern and contemporary art. Along the Spree, the East Side Gallery preserves a long stretch of the Wall covered in murals.
The Berlin Biennale and the spring Gallery Weekend are among the year’s key events, along with Berlin Art Week in September. Galleries are spread across Mitte, Kreuzberg, Schöneberg and Charlottenburg, while Neukölln and Wedding hold a dense concentration of studios and artist-run spaces. The scene is strongly international, and many artists here work in English, which makes conversations easy for visitors.
On Artblr, you can explore work by Berlin artists and write to them directly. Ask questions, discuss shipping to Canada or elsewhere, or arrange a studio visit on your next trip; many artists are also glad to show a piece over a video call. Direct contact with the artist is commission-free.
