When the intangible wind flow through branches of a tree, they gently rustle. The tree rocks back and forth above the ground, the roots anchor it down. The soft, uncertain, ever changing elements challenging the solid, rational, unmoving counterparts. The energy exchange between the tree and the wind when they meet is fascinating for me, this painting is a visualisation of the power dynamic between two forces.
Chang’s works focus on two things, the complexity of sense of belonging, and the documentation of queer intimacy. Chang’s paintings- occasionally sculptures- are fluid figures with multiple interpreted identities. Most of the subjects are imaginative. They tell a uniformed story of the difficulty to tell apart objects with standardised description. Sense of belonging is suggested by the feeling of being home, but being an object or a person without satisfactory definition, where is home? Queer experience is complex and hard to define, so rather than define it, Chang chooses to document it. Out of all the things that make a person queer, queer sexuality and queer intimacy is the most looked at element, however due to the taboo nature of sex, most of it is mysterious and sometimes it is even portrayed in theatrical and exaggerated ways. Documenting it demystifies queer, and can bridge the gap between the reality and the myths.
